Here's what we've been working on and what's to come:
Letterland: We have been will be learning the sound of the 'r' blends (br, cr, gr, pr, fr,tr, dr). We will review past Lettterland concepts.
Math: We have begun our unit 4 which is all about strategies for subtracting from 20. We will be counting to subtract, making 10 to subtract, fact families, use addition to subtract, explaining subtraction strategies, solving word problems involving subtraction, etc.
Social Emotional: We are practicing working independently for longer periods of time, working responsibly with partners and taking responsibility for the classroom.
Literacy:
Skills Block: The students have continued working hard on practicing certain skills during Skills Block (Reading to Self or now known as A.I.R, Buddy Reading, Practicing Writing, Word Work, Raz-Kids) while the teachers work with small groups of students. The students have been working in differentiated reading/spelling groups with teachers .
Module Lesson: During whole group Module lessons we have launched students learning about the sun, moon, and stars by focusing on literary texts about these celestial objects. In the first part of this unit, we are exploring the unit guiding question-"Why do authors write about the sun, moon, and stars?"-by participating in a cycle of inquiry through observations and literature. We have focused on noticing and wondering about the sun and moon with a close viewing of both photographs and time-lapse videos. We have generated questions about these celestial objects and began reading literature that centers on these objects. We will also be completing a series of focused read-alouds, in which they will explore a number of literary texts. Each text is read over the course of two lessons: students answer text-dependent questions, complete a story elements board to track the elements of the text, participate in role-play to better make sense of what they are reading and writing in response to the text. We will also gather language from these stories that describe the appearance and movement of the sun and moon.
Labs: In Create Lab students will explore with watercolor paints to blend colors to mimic the sky at different times of the day. In Explore Lab students will engage in a variety of activities in which they explore light and shadow. In Imagine Lab students will continue to create a world of play as they reenact, and later create, stories about the sky. In Research Lab students will use research skills to learn new information and ask questions about the sky.
