Hi parents!
Math homework was sent home today. Students only received 3 sheets this week. They will be due on Friday.
Please make sure students bring their books tomorrow to change them
As the weather gets cold through January, please make sure your child is bringing a coat to school and wearing appropriate clothing. We will go out for recess every day unless the temperature is below 32 degrees or raining.
In Curriculum:
Literacy: We are still working with Unit 2, which is all about reading to learn and writing to understand patterns of the sun, moon, and stars. We will be reading to build our understanding of patterns, and answer the question “What patterns can we observe in the sky?” During this unit, we will also be working to become ethical people and examine our habits for how we treat others. We will practice the habit of integrity and taking responsibility for our learning by participating in Science Talks in small groups and will be creating a Sky Notebook with all our learning in it. Next week, we will begin section 3 of this unit, in which the students will create a narrative poem using the information they have learned about space.
We will continue to work hard during Skills Block within our small groups in Writing, Fluency, Word Work, AIR, and with the teacher. Our students will be put in new skills groups when we return based on their current spelling level.
Math: We have finished Topic 5, which is working with addition and subtraction equations. This past week we found missing numbers to make equations true, worked word problems with three addends, and worked on understanding the equal sign. We will also be working hard at differentiated levels within the classroom to gain mastery of these standards through games, technology, projects, and standards-based activities. Next week, we will begin topic 6 which is about collecting data.
Social Studies: We are exploring the ideas of things that happened a long time ago and comparing them with the present tense. For example, what homes, technology, and cities looked like a long time ago and how they have developed over their years.
Important Dates:
Children’s Theater Permission form was sent home before break! Please return those as soon as possible! (February 27th Trip)
Tuesday, January 14th: First Grade Full Day Team Planning (Ms. Shy will be the substitute in our class. I will be in the building and will be checking on the students throughout the day.)
Monday, January 20th: MLK Holiday! No School!
Friday, January 24th: No School! Teacher Workday!
Tuesday, January 28th: Class Picture Day!
